Niki and the Dove Takes Flight

Since forming in Stockholm in early 2010, the outlandish duo of Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf, aka Niki and The Dove, have been described as one of Europe’s most exciting bands by the NME, signed to legendary Seattle imprint Sub Pop (Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Low) and released one of the most well-received debut singles in recent memory.

Their sound is one of vivid colour and contrast. New EP The Drummer, though not dispensing entirely with the Kate Bush/Fever Ray spook-pop of previous outings, makes a brave and accomplished foray into unabashed euro-pop territory with the title track.  Equally in thrall to Mother Nature as to the dancefloor (The Birth of the Sun, The Breath of the World) this is quirky, Scandinavian pop at its best.

Currently applying the finishing touches to their debut album, 2012 looks set to be a hectic year for Niki and the Dove. They’ve already picked up a nod from the BBC Sound of 2012 panel, and along with contemporaries such as I Break Horses, are spreading the word that Sweden is the place to go to for intrinsically melodic, 21st-century music with a devastating, expansive edge.
