Air France Take Off
Air France’s Henrik Markstedt and Joel Karlsson have been on something of a hiatus since 2009’s stand alone single, Gothenburg Belongs To Us. They finally broke their silence in August with It Feels Good To Be Around You, four minutes of pure pop perfection mixed by UK producer Star Slinger. It’s an appropriate introduction to the Air France sound. Chopped samples wrestle for prominence with distorted vocal lines and butterfly synths, as the most delicate of instrumentation – in this case steel drums – binds the whole thing together like industrial superglue.
Despite obvious comparisons with the likes of Saint Etienne and Avalanches, this is music with a beating, nay thumping, Balearic heart. They may reside in Gothenburg, but for Air France, it’s eternally sunrise somewhere on a beach in the warm, enveloping Mediterranean Sea.
