Dream Scapes

At first glance innocent and sweet, Helena Blomqvist’s images ultimately conjure up confusion and tension, fairytales mixed with horror films. Children in Victorian lace dresses have distorted limbs, chimps dressed as bellboys line up in passive aggressive modes and llamas come across as the most secretly evil creatures in the animal kingdom.

The exhibition Stories from Another World at Fotografiska follows Blomqvist’s development from 2000 till now and runs until 3 June.

With a dash of Timothy Burton and a pinch of early Jean - Paul Gaultier ads, the stylised, crisp images are otherwordly and bordering on kitsch, but Blomqvist always pulls back at the last minute, instead tipping the observer into a world that reflects dark thoughts and instincts within all our souls – leaving us wanting more from this unique artist.
